Child sized fish fillet chunks from Ding Xin Seafood

Fish for Children in Singapore: The Softest Fillets and How to Check for Bones

For young children, choose the softest deboned fillet you can, ordered as child sized chunks, and always check for small bones before serving. No filleting process removes every bone with certainty, and we say so on our product pages. Here is which fish to start with, which cuts to order and how to prepare them, from the choices at our Jurong West stall.

Which fish is best for babies and young children?

Fish Texture Why families choose it
Threadfin (Balai) Very soft The fish parents and caregivers ask us for most. Our threadfin comes from Balai, Indonesia. Doris, our mother, started filleting and cutting it into child sized chunks for families who wanted something their babies could eat.
Cod Very soft, flaky Mild and clean tasting. Wild caught from Iceland and Norway.
Red snapper Soft, moist One of our most affordable fillets and a popular alternative to threadfin for children.
Sea bass (barramundi) Soft, flaky Clean and mild. Farmed in Malaysian saltwater.
Salmon trout Tender, fatty Rich in flavour and popular with older children who already eat a variety of fish.

Our fillet comparison covers all 12 fillets side by side, including taste, texture and the best dish for each. Our threadfin guide goes deeper into why Balai threadfin is the one families ask for.

About bones: what deboned means and what it does not

When we debone a fillet, we remove the bones by hand. Our product pages and the fillet packs say to check for small bones before serving children and the elderly, because no hand deboning process catches every pin bone with certainty. That is true everywhere fish is deboned, not just at our stall. If you are feeding a baby or a very young child:

  • Flake the cooked fillet with a fork and run your finger through each piece before serving.
  • Child sized chunks (cubes) are easier to check than a large piece.
  • Threadfin and cod are the fish families try first with young children because of their soft texture.

Which cut to order for children

  • Child sized chunks (cubes): select "Child Chunks" on the product page where it is offered. These are small deboned cubes for porridge, soup or the pan. Check each piece for small bones before serving, as with any deboned fish.
  • Thin slices: for older children eating steamboat or fish soup.
  • Standard fillet (whole piece): cook it whole and flake it yourself after cooking, checking as you go.

Fillets come from 150 to 200G up to 1 KG packed into four packets.

Ready made packs for children

  • Baby's First Fishes (6 months to 2 years): cod, threadfin and salmon trout fillets, all cut into cubes and split into 250G packets.
  • Kid's Premium Fishes (2 years and above): cod (best part), threadfin, salmon and emperor red snapper fillets in portioned sizes.

Vacuum sealing and storage

For fillets you can choose vacuum sealing at checkout for $0.10 per fillet. Freeze what you will not cook in the first two days: our storage guide explains how to freeze and thaw safely, including the extra step for vacuum sealed packs.
